Official Opening of the Mount Hotham Biathlon Arena

The Australian Biathlon Association is very pleased to announce the official opening of the Hotham Biathlon Arena, by Ms Danielle Green MP, Parliamentary Secretary for Tourism, Major Events and Regional Victoria.

The only biathlon range in Australia has been recently extended by three lanes, and all lanes have been widened to International Biathlon Union width. These extra lanes are part of a $150,000 + project, the Whiskey Flat Biathlon Range Facility Improvement Project, made possible by the Victorian State Government's Shooting Sports Facilities Program, with the State Government paying for two thirds of the cost of the project.

The ceremony will take place at the home of Australian Biathlon, some 3 km east of the Hotham Alpine Village, just prior to the start of the Australian Biathlon Championship races on Saturday 12 August. Spectators are most welcome from 9am, to watch the zeroing (preparation), ceremony and races, where over 40 contenders will race, from "fun" level under 12s doing laser biathlon, to those in Veterans class. The Blue Ribbon events are the Men and Women Open events, where hopefuls for Winter Olympic Games 2018 will be participating.

Australian Biathlon Association President, Dr Grant Flanagan, said  the biathlong community was "delighted" to have Ms Green offically open the range.

"The range facility is a testament to our volunteers, many of whom have worked many hours, with little recognition," Mr Flanagan said.

"We should all be proud of what we have delivered here. Our thanks to the Victorian Government, who have provided financial support to the Association to help extend the range, and who clearly understand the sport."
