A man, his bike, and the Great Alpine Road

“It’s a great personal challenge” Kevin Jenner said of his mission to achieve the 7 Peaks cycling challenge.

Victoria’s 7 Peaks challenge is a cycling challenge designed to go at-your-own-pace. The challenge runs from between October 2017 and April 2018, taking you up winding mountain roads, around steep turns and past spectacular views right to the top of seven Victorian Alpine Resorts.

The 65-year-old has finally been able to make 2017 his year in cycling the 7 Peaks, after starting the goal last year before an accident saw him cut the end of his thumb off with a saw.

Mr Jenner had ridden Mt Hotham’s picturesque and challenging road 10 years prior and had been wanting to take on the tough ride again.

“This year I thought this is it, I’m going to complete it, because I’m getting older and I won’t be able to do it forever.

“The Hotham ride is one of the ones I really wanted to get ticked off, the other one I’m scared of is Baw Baw.

So far, Mr Jenner has completed Mt Buller, Mt Buffalo and now Hotham. He will continue over the next two weeks to complete Dinner Plain, Falls Creek and Mt Baw Baw.

Mr Jenner said the 7 Peaks Challenge is the reason behind his motivation to complete the 7 mountain challenges.

“7 Peaks is a great initiative because it gets people involved, and many people like the challenge of completing something or a goal to aim towards,” he said.

“I have done rides around the bay and various long rides elsewhere, but it’s the challenge I like, to have something ahead that I am aiming towards.

“Mt Hotham is a hard climb, but I enjoyed it. The people here are friendly, I didn’t have any trouble with other road users, it was really good and well-advertised.

“The views here are magnificent, not knocking the other mountains but some of the views aren’t anything like this – its spectacular!

“You’re actually above the tree line and there are good views all the way up, whereas the other mountains you’re wondering up the valleys and you don’t see as much, but here its amazing,” Mr Jenner said.
