Kids Club participants at Mt Hotham are doing their bit for the environment with the help of students from the Alpine School.
Mount Hotham Alpine Resort Management Board’s ongoing commitment to reduce landfill has led to Kids Club introducing its own waste initiative this season.
Children and staff are now disposing of their food packaging and scraps using bins for recycling, organics, general waste and via the Kids Club’s own soft plastics collection.
Alpine School students Jenk, Creon and Lewis helped implement the program by designing waste education posters that are being displayed inside at Big D to help remind everyone which bin to use.
The students combined their artistic skills and their insight about what messages appeal to kids to create four unique posters for organics (all food and bio packaging) recycling (milk containers and biscuit trays), rubbish (non-recyclable items or not organic) and soft plastic (scrunchable chip and biscuit wrappers).
Kids Club Supervisor Thea Powell said everyone involved in Kids Club had so far embraced the move.
“Everyone’s onboard and helping by putting their rubbish in the right bin which at the same time is educating the kids,” she said.
“This was the first time we’ve worked with the Alpine School and it’s been great, the students have done an amazing job designing all the posters.
“What they’ve come up with is familiar to the kids with pictures of what they’re eating and what they’re eating out of, so the posters have helped a lot.”
Mount Hotham Alpine Resort Management Board works in partnership with NevRwaste and the community to actively promote and reduce solid waste within the resort.
Locals and guests at encouraged to dispose of their litter responsibly while any further information or assistance on waste and recycling can be directed to Environmental Officer Bev Lawrence on 03 5759 3550.
