We're hiring! Find your dream snow job this winter!

Posted 24 March 2023

Mount Hotham Skiing Company is currently recruiting seasonal winter staff with roles from lift operators, snowmakers and groomers, to housekeepers, building maintenance assistants, chefs and kitchen hands. There are also corporate roles in human resources and in guest services, as well as retail shop attendants and outdoor operations assistants, to name a few.

“Seasonal work is an exciting career option and a great way to gain experience, learn skills, make lifelong friends and have an unforgettable experience, something everyone needs after the last few pandemic years,” said Gavin Girling, HR Director for Vail Resorts Australia, which also owns Falls Creek Ski Lifts in Victoria and Perisher Ski Lifts in New South Wales.

Many of the jobs available are working outdoors in the beautiful natural mountain surroundings and offer benefits such as lift passes and lessons, as well as new this year – forty per cent off retail purchases in each resort.

David McLean has been a lift operator at Hotham for the past three seasons and says he keeps coming back because the alpine environment is a unique experience with its own challenges that mean every day is engaging.

“Meeting people from all over the world, each with such different experiences and perspectives is also really cool,” said David.

He says it’s a friendly, collegiate environment between the lift staff and other departments and can be very physical with lots of shovelling and de-icing.

“The only way for the lifts to operate is for everyone to work together as a team,” said David. “It’s a really rewarding job when you get the lifts spinning and can see all your hard work paying off and the enjoyment guests experience from skiing and snowboarding – that’s an amazing feeling.”

Over summer, he works on the mountain as a labourer and gets to see the environment through each season, which provides a better understanding and deeper appreciation of the mountain and how lucky we are to have these facilities available to us.

But, no matter how much he enjoys working as a lift operator, what he’s most looking forward to in the upcoming season is his time off to ski.

“I enjoy skiing and it’s awesome that my job allows me to be in a position to do something so fun,” said David.

Other perks to a job with Mount Hotham Skiing Company are a free lift pass, free group lessons with our qualified snowsports instructors, discounts at our food, rental and retail outlets, employee recognition programs, staff events, training, wellness programs and more.

Being part of Vail Resorts, the leading mountain resort operator in the world, with 41 ski areas including iconic resorts such as Park City, Beaver Creek, Whistler Blackcomb and Vail in North America, also provides a chance to tap into summer employment with our Northern Hemisphere resorts to chase winter year round.

“Whether it’s your first time seeing snow or you were born on the slopes, we’d love to welcome you to the team,” said Gavin. “Work and play in the mountains and discover (or re-discover) a passion for the outdoors.”
