BACKCOUNTRY COURSE

Friday 3 August to Sunday 5 August

This course teaches snow survival skills for backcountry tourers. The course will run from 1pm Friday 3 August to Sunday 5 August, including a snow camp on Saturday night. 

The topics covered are:
Preparation: how to prepare for a day, overnight or long trip
Weather: where to find information about weather and how to read its effect
Navigation: be involved in a map and compass exercise 
Terrain: learn how to read terrain, how to travel safely, common terrain traps, avalanche awareness, snow pit, beacon and probe practice 
First aid: emergency treatment of the most common injuries
Survival skills: emergency shelters, snow cave construction, team dynamics
 
Friday afternoon will consist of lectures and practice in preparation to head out on snow on Saturday morning. 
 

The cost per person is $600 (including a workbook). 

The course is conducted by David Wilson from Mt Hotham Ski Patrol. Please contact David on the below for bookings. 

Please note a minimum of 5 people and a maximum of 12 people will be admitted to the course.
