Trail Description

The Razorback Walk begins at the Diamantina Hut, where you immediately ascend onto the high, narrow ridge connecting Mt Hotham and Mt Feathertop. This trail stays mostly above the tree line, providing unparalleled views of the surrounding peaks, valleys, and alpine meadows.

As you progress, the trail's terrain alternates between rocky sections and grassy ridges. The exposed nature of the trail means you’ll enjoy panoramic vistas for most of the hike, but it also makes it vulnerable to unpredictable weather.

Approximately 10.5 km in, the Razorback meets the Bungalow Spur Track at a location known as The Cross. From here, it’s a steep but short 1.5 km ascent to the summit of Mt Feathertop (1,922 metres). The summit offers awe-inspiring views of the surrounding alpine landscape.

Return via the same route, taking time to appreciate the views as you retrace your steps along the ridge or take the Bungalow Spur Track, which descends approximately 10 km through sheltered forests to Harrietville, offering an alternative finish to your hike. Hikers also have the option to stay overnight at Federation Hut, located near Little Feathertop, to divide the journey across multiple days or to shelter during adverse weather conditions.

Accessibility

• Parking: Parking is available at Diamantina Hut, accessible via the Great Alpine Road. The car park is along the roadside and can fill during busy periods, this also serves as the trailhead for this hike.

What to Bring

• Footwear: Sturdy, supportive hiking boots are essential.

• Clothing: Dress in layers and bring waterproof gear, as alpine weather can change rapidly, and the wind can make for a chilly walk along the ridgeline!

• Water: Carry at least 3 litres of water per person. Along the way, water is available at two locations with slight detours: untreated tank water can be accessed at Federation Hut, and a natural spring is located approximately 500 metres down the Northwest Spur Track. However, these sources should not be relied upon between December and March.

• Food: Pack high-energy snacks and a substantial lunch.

• Sun Protection: Sunscreen, a hat, and sunglasses are vital due to the trail's exposure.

• Navigation Tools: While the trail is well-marked, a map or GPS is helpful in poor weather conditions.

• Emergency Gear: A first aid kit, whistle, and mobile phone (though signal may be limited) are essential for safety.

Safety Tips

• Weather Awareness: Always check the forecast before your hike. The ridge is very exposed and should not be attempted in bad weather.

• Fitness Requirements: This hike requires a good level of fitness. Allow plenty of time for rests and to enjoy the scenery.

• Emergency Plan: Inform someone of your plans, and carry a personal locator beacon if hiking solo.
