Summit Walk

The Summit Walk is a short and scenic trail that offers a gentle introduction to the Mt Hotham Resort area, rewarding hikers with sweeping views of the surrounding alpine landscape. Ideal for families or those new to hiking, this walk is a great way to explore the beauty of the Alpine National Park.

  • Start Point: Base of the Summit Trainer ski lift in Hotham Village, or an alternative starting point is Diamantina Hut on the Great Alpine Road.

  • Best Time to Hike: November to April, during the warmer months when the track is snow-free.

Trail Description

The Summit Walk begins at the base of the Summit Trainer ski lift in the heart of Hotham Village. From here, the trail ascends a grassy slope. The steady but manageable climb leads to the summit of Mt Hotham, which sits at an elevation of 1,861 metres.

At the summit, hikers are treated to breathtaking panoramic views. Follow the vehicle track from the top of the chairlift past the Telstra tower to the fire tower for inspiring 360-degree views of Mt Buffalo, Mt Feathertop, and Mt Buller. The summit is also accessible via the Summit Link Track from Diamantina Hut, providing an alternative route for those exploring other parts of the resort.

The walk is well-suited for a relaxing outing, allowing plenty of time to take in the scenery and enjoy the fresh alpine air. The descent follows the same route, offering a great view of the resort itself.

  • Grade: Easy/Moderate – suitable for most fitness levels, with a climb to the summit.

  • Track Type: Grassy slope with slightly uneven sections.

Accessibility

  • Parking: Convenient parking is available in Hotham Village at Corrall Carpark. Parking on the roadside at Diamantina Hut also available from the other direction.

  • Trailhead: Easily accessible from the main resort area, making it ideal for day visitors or those passing through.

  • Footwear: Comfortable walking shoes or light hiking boots.

  • Clothing: Layers suitable for changing weather conditions, including a windproof jacket.

  • Water: Carry at least 1 litre of water per person.

  • Sun Protection: As this is an exposed walk, sunscreen, a hat, and sunglasses are all essential.

  • Camera: Capture the stunning vistas from the summit.
