The Hotham difference:
Unlike most resorts, the village is perched near the summit with a series of ridges and gullies descending from the top. When storms hit from the south with a cold north-west airflow these terrain features fill up with deep dry snow. This unique topography means Hotham is one of the few resorts in the world where you can make your first turns before catching a lift.
First Tracks:
Early birds get the powder! Starting soon, Epic Australia Pass holders can enjoy pristine early morning conditions on Heavenly Valley. First Tracks will be available from 7:30 am Wednesday to Sunday. Check the Hotham App, then click in and go before anyone else in Australia!
Secret Stash:
If the weather’s a bit on the wild side, head to the protected areas of Blue Ribbon. Slightly lower in elevation, this was Hotham’s first lifted terrain and provides excellent shelter during the eye of a storm. The trees of Wood Run and Varsity Drag provide great consistent fall line riding on a powder day out of the elements.
Choosing the right equipment:
Go big! The right equipment choices can make or break your day. For snowboarders this could mean swapping to a wider board and setting the bindings back a touch. Skiers might swap out the piste skis for a longer, wider option with some rocker to improve flotation in the pow. Ski and board technology continues to evolve, however generally speaking, a ski over 90mm in the waist is better in deeper snow. When you see a storm on the horizon, don’t forget you can always demo the latest and greatest pow skis from OneTree Sports.
Skill up and take a lesson:
For those looking to improve their powder skills, consider taking a lesson with Hotham’s Ski and Ride School. Offering a wide variety of programs, you’ll improve your technique and maximise your enjoyment. Checkout all the Hotham lesson options here.
Tip: New for 2021, checkout our 1hr Earlybird Private Lessons. Starting at 7.30am when Heavenly Valley First Tracks is running, make the most of your pow mornings - skip the lift queues, discover secret spots and improve your pow riding!
