Peak Snow Incoming!

Posted 17 July 2024

We’re looking forward to up to 40cm of snow forecast for this Friday night and Saturday. It’s great news for powder hunters after more than 26cm fell earlier this week. It will assist in setting up the snowpack for the rest of the season, and with more snow in the 14 day forecast we will be opening more terrain before you know it!

Being Friday night and Saturday we expect traffic to the resort to be high. With high snowfalls and high traffic expected it’s important you plan ahead to ensure you have an enjoyable and hassle-free visit. Here’s some of our top tips for you:

Chains and Chain Hire

  • Wheel chains are mandatory for entry to Mt Hotham – please check in advance that wheel chains can be fitted to your vehicle.
  • You can check the chain fitting status at any time on the homepage of the Hotham website.
  • More information and chain hire locations can be found here.

Getting Here

  • When driving to or through Hotham, plan ahead for snowfall and icy road conditions – drive to the conditions and your ability and be respectful of other road users.
  • Travel prepared with snacks and warm clothing in the case of encountering delays on the road.
  • Travelling from Melbourne? It may be worth considering driving via Omeo which follows a less exposed route.
  • Consider alternative transport options if you are not confident driving in the snow.
  • Ensure you have purchased your Resort Entry Permit if you plan on stopping in the resort. This is not required if you are travelling through to Dinner Plain.

Upon Arrival

  • Keep an eye out for the Hotham parking attendants who will direct you to the next available car park.
  • Make a note of your car park location as a snowfall may mean that you might not be able to identify your car by sight at the end of the day.
  • It is a good idea to pack a shovel for days when there is snow forecasted.

Winter or Alpine Diesel and Fuel

  • Overnight temperatures have been very low recently, so if you drive a diesel car we recommend filling up with Winter or Alpine diesel in Bright or Omeo. You can also add a diesel fuel anti-gelling additive to help ensure you are able to get going at the end of the day.
  • Please note that there are no commercial fuel supplies at Mt Hotham so fill up in Bright or Omeo depending on which way you are travelling to the resort.

Weather

  • Weather in Alpine areas can change quickly, this weekend is forecast to have heavy snow and strong winds.
  • Bring plenty of warm, waterproof clothing and make sure you’re prepared for a day outdoors.
  • Day visitors might consider a change of clothes for the trip home.
  • Keep across the Bureau of Meteorology's most recent forecast here.

We’re excited about the incoming snow and the great conditions it will bring to the resort! It’s going to be an awesome few storm skiing days and the conditions that follow will be all-time. We want to ensure everyone arrives safely so please use the advice above when travelling to Hotham!
