Discover Hotham's Tracks and Trails

Whether you're an experienced hiker or a fresh face to the tracks, there is plenty to do at Hotham during the warmer months.

Our Mt Loch area is a great place to walk for people of all levels of experience, with several options starting at the Loch carpark, 1 km west of the Mt Hotham village.

Some of these walks take you to our historic huts and all of them provide wonderful vistas of our beautiful mountains. Most of these walks take you mainly across the top of Hotham and the surrounding area - not too much climbing!

  1. Mount Loch (8km return) - Perfect for a ramble that's not too taxing, this walk provides impressive views of the the High Plains, Mt Hotham and the rugged east face of Mt Feathertop.
  2. Derrick Hut (9km return) - Derrick Hut was built as a day shelter for cross country skiers and is named after Charlie Derrick, a cross country skier who died in a blizzard while attempting to ski from Mt Bogong to Mt Hotham.
  3. Spargo Hut (11km return) - Spargo Hut belonged to Bill Spargo, a local identity who discovered and opened the Red Robin Mine and ran the first Hotham Heights guest house.
  4. Dibbins Hut (18km return) - Standing on a plain beside the Cobungra River, this walk makes a pleasant destination for a day walk or an overnight hike. This hut was built in 1987 on the site of the original Dibbins Hut, built in 1920, which fell into disrepair.
  5. Dibbins-Mt Loch Circuit (19 km return) - Dibbins Hut can be included in a longer day walk or overnight hike. The best campsite if you are walking overnight is on the Cobungra River near Dibbins Hut.

Tips:

  • If you are sharp-eyed, you might spot the elusive Alpine Marsh Marigold at this time of year. Find out more

  • If you are into the activity of geocaching, you will find a number of caches around the Hotham area. If you are not familiar with geocaching, it's basically an outdoor 'treasure hunt' using the GPS capabilities of your smartphone, great to do with kids. Find out more

You can download your Tracks and Trails Map before you arrive or pick up your copy from the Mount Hotham Resort Management Board office or Transit Station. The General also has maps available.

Remember to always be well prepared for walking in the alpine environment, where the conditions and weather can change very quickly. Always let someone know where you are going and when you expect to return, and don't forget to check back in with them.
