Mt Hotham's free guided walks are back for January, 2023!

Curious about Hotham's local history, flora and fauna?

Always wanted to try hiking at Hotham but not confident to do it alone?

Love the idea of hiking but hate the idea of doing it hard?

Our free guided short walks are just what you need! Family-friendly and full of interesting facts and stunning views, these walks are a great way to spend a couple of hours in an amazing environment high above the clouds.

Join our experienced Hotham guide on a free guided hike this summer, and discover Hotham's diverse and extensive trail network.

What to Bring

  • Sturdy walking/hiking shoes or boots

  • Warm socks (we recommend avoiding cotton for hiking).

  • Comfortable hiking pants or shorts.

  • Warm jacket 

  • Water bottle with a minimum of 1 litre water  

  • Camera (you won't want to miss capturing some of the best views in Victoria!)

  • Hat, sunglasses, sunscreen and lip balm - don't forget to always slip, slop and slap when adventuring outside! 

  • Walking poles, if you require them

  • Small backpack for water, rain jacket, and snacks.   

  • Mt Hotham Flora Guide - buy a printed copy from our office before the walk for $5, or download the Mt Hotham Flora Guide for free from our website.

Weather can be unpredictable at ALL times of the year in the alpine environment, so we  recommend packing rainwear and an extra dry warm layer.

Walk details

Walk 1: Mt Hotham Summit Walk
9am to 11:30am, approx 3.5 km

Meeting point: outside the Mt Hotham Visitor Information office

Duration: approximately 2.5 hours

Difficulty: Suitable for beginners; total ascent approx 140 metres, total descent 140 metres. 

Group size: Max 12 guests 

Details:

Join us for a guided walk with our experienced guide as we venture over Mt Hotham's Summit to the Fire Lookout Tower where you will enjoy some of the best views on the mountain (including Mt Feathertop and Razorback). This will be a fantastic introduction to mountain hiking as well as the local flora and fauna and the region around Mt Hotham. 

 

Walk 2: Christmas Hills Walk
1.30pm to 5.30pm. approx 9 km

Meeting point: outside the Mt Hotham Visitor Information office

Duration: approximately 4 hours

Difficulty: Suitable for more experienced walkers;  total ascent approx 190 metres, total descent 190 metres. 

Group size: Max 12 guests 

Details:

Our afternoon walk departs from the Mt Hotham Visitor Information office and heads to one of our favourite photo spots: Mt Higginbotham lookout. From the lookout, we will head over the 'Big D', down to The General (aiming to arrive at 2pm - guests can also join us from this location if preferred), stopping to talk about the diverse alpine flora and fauna, and the stunning Mt Hotham region along the way.  

From The General we'll admire the charming chalet style architecture in Davenport Village as we walk through to Slatey Shed, before walking up Christmas Hill and the Big Spur. Finally we will turn around after admiring the stunning views at Brandy Creek lookout and returning the same way we came. 

Please note: Advertised hikes are weather dependant and the program will be adjusted to best suit the conditions.
