Mt Hotham Free Guided Walks

Mt Hotham's free guided walks are back again for 2025!

Discover Hotham's diverse and extensive trail network and take part in our free guided walks this season led by our experienced and knowledgeable Hotham guide.  Family-friendly and full of interesting facts and stunning views, these walks are a great way to spend a couple of hours in an amazing environment high above the clouds.

 

Hiking Program

Breathe in the crisp mountain air and make the most of your Saturdays this January with our free guided hikes! RSVP to either our shorter morning hike, or our longer afternoon hike (or both!) 


Weekend 1: Saturday 4 January, 2025 - AM and PM Hike options 

Weekend 2: Saturday 11 January, 2025 - AM and PM Hike options 

Weekend 3  Saturday 18 January, 2025 - AM and PM Hike options 

Weekend 4:  Saturday 25 January, 2025 - AM and PM Hike options 

Weekend 5:  Saturday 1 February, 2025 - AM and PM Hike options

Walk details

AM Summit Morning Walk
Date: Every Saturday in January + Saturday 1 February 
Time: 9am to 11.30am (2.5 hours)
Meeting point: Hotham Resort Management office.  
Distance: Approx 3.5km (Total expected ascent: 140m, total expected descent: 140m)
Difficulty: Suitable for Beginners.

Discover the beauty of Mt Hotham with our introductory hike to the summit. This rewarding walk may be short, but it offers 360-degree views that make it truly unforgettable.

The highlight of the hike is reaching Mt Hotham's summit, where you'll find the iconic fire lookout tower and some of the most picturesque landscapes in the region—perfect for photography enthusiasts.

On the way, our expert guide will lead a short detour to the historic Baldy Gold Mine, sharing fascinating insights into Mt Hotham’s history, from its gold rush beginnings to its transformation into a beloved alpine destination.

 

PM Afternoon Walks

Two afternoon walks will be available on alternating weekends.

Spargo’s Hut Walk

Date: Saturday 4 January, Saturday 18 January, Saturday 1 February
Time: 1.30pm (3-4 hours)
Meeting point: Alpine Gateway
Distance: Approx 10km
Difficulty: Some bushwalking experience recommended

Head out along the Machinery Spur, with views of the Razorback ridge to your left and views back to Mt Hotham village on your right.  Explore Bill Spargo's hut, originally built in the 1930's for as a shelter for gold prospecting. The humble hut is of historical significance and is listed on Victoria's State Heritage Register. You'll also follow along a section of the Australian Alps Walking Track, an iconic 655km-long trail that runs from Walhalla in Victoria, through NSW to the ACT.

Mount Loch and Derrick’s Hut Walk

Date: Saturday 11 January, Saturday 25 January
Time: 1.30pm (3-4 hours)
Meeting point: Alpine Gateway
Distance: Approx 11km
Difficulty: Some bushwalking experience recommended

Also beinning along the Machinery Spur, with it's impressive views, and following part of the Australian Alps Walking Track, this walk will take your to the summit of Mt Loch, arguably Hotham's best 360 degree view point. You'll also get to see part of Hotham's history, Derrick's Hut, named as a memorial for cross-country skier Charles Derrick, the hut is beautifully cared for by the Wangaratta Ski Club. The ski-wreath scupture on the building front is well known by local hikers in the summer and skiers through the winter.

 


 

What to bring on our guided walks?

  • Sturdy walking/hiking shoes or boots

  • Warm socks (we recommend avoiding cotton for hiking).

  • Comfortable hiking pants or shorts.

  • Warm jacket 

  • Water bottle with a minimum of 1 litre water  

  • Snacks, and lunch for longer walks

  • Camera (you won't want to miss capturing some of the best views in Victoria!)

  • Hat, sunglasses, sunscreen and lip balm - don't forget to always slip, slop and slap when adventuring outside! 

  • Walking poles, if you require them

  • Small backpack for water, rain jacket, and snacks.

Weather can be unpredictable at ALL times of the year in the alpine environment, we always recommend packing rainwear and an extra dry warm layer.
