CYCLING

The road to Hotham is one of Australia's most iconic cycling routes with its scenic and challenging climbs and breathtaking descents. Both competitive and non-competitive rides start and finish at Hotham which you can view on our Events page.

A Spectacular Challenge

The Great Alpine Rd connecting Harrietville - Mt Hotham - Dinner Plain - Omeo provides a great challenge for road cyclists. Starting in the beautiful valley town of Harrietville, this ride takes you up one of the most stunning roads in Australia.

The road winds through lush green areas, tall forests and majestic snowgums, then traverses the top of the mountain range, surrounded by vistas of endless mountain peaks and valleys.

Stunning views

The road passes local huts and ski lodges, providing a spectacular view of Mt Buffalo, Mt Feathertop and the high plains. The ride a true alpine challenge with climbs with a maximum grade of 18%.

Refresh

Mt Hotham Village supplies free fresh drinking water and public facilities at the Transit Station next to the main Village carpark (Corral carpark).
You can also stop at The General in the resort for a meal, coffee or cold drink - or make Hotham your base for a weekend of epic cycling and book a night or two in at one of our summer accomodation options

Keen to take the crown?

Mt Hotham is among Victoria’s most iconic cycling climbs, and the crown of it's Strava segment is yours for the taking.

The 'Mount Hotham' Strava segment is a fraction shy of 30km.  Beginning from the base of Harrietville and with a total elevation gain of 1304m, this climb is a tasty test for all keen riders.
Featuring three infamous pinchpoints - first, get ready to make friends with 'The Meg', a lung-busting 300m stretch with a gradient of 11.8%.
Your second test comes a little further along when you hit CRB Hill,  a beautiful 700m stretch, with gradients of more than 10% (if the breathtaking views aren't distracting enough - we challenge you to work out what CRB stands for by the time you hit the peak). The last, and debatably the toughest part of the climb, is coming into Diamantina. Again, if the views aren't taking your breath away - this testing 1.4km stretch where you're chewing up a 9% gradient, surely will.

Rolling down into Mt Hotham's village though makes it ALL worth it!
Not chasing crowns? We can recommend breaking the climb into 'bite sized' attempts - see how far you get this time.
